Objectives
Following survey design and implementation in work package 3, the main objective of work package 4 is to move to the subsequent phase of data analysis through extensive use of statistical methods (cross-tabulations, regression analysis, logistic regression, etc.). Through multivariate analyses we aim to assess the extent to which cross-national differences on key cultural variables (defined and retrieved in wp3) persist when controlling for individual-level background characteristics, such as gender, age, level of education, labour market position, and timing of immigration.
Description of work
Subsequent to the phase of survey design and data collection, the important analysis phase work package 4 will begin. Here we aim to apply multivariate statistical methods and qualitative comparative analysis to address the key questions, which go to the core of this call. The survey data will be analysed using standard statistical methods (cross-tabulations, regression analysis, logistic regression, etc.). It will provide reliable indicators on crucial individual aspects of the Muslim population, such as attitudes, norms, and values, cultural and religious resources and practices, gender and age differences, and interethnic and interreligious relations.
Furthermore, the analysis will be linked to work packages 1 and 2. Residual cross-national differences that remain after controlling for the individual background characteristics and group differences will be linked to the formal and informal aspects of our independent variable (work packages 1 and 2) by way of qualitative comparative..
Another key research question that we shall address by analysing the survey data is the relationship between cultural and socio-economic integration for these specific groups, which has been a topic of much public and policy debate in recent times.
We propose that our analysis will proceed in three steps. In a first step, each participant will perform country-specific analyses with the national data. Special attention will be paid to multivariate analyses and comparisons across the groups studied. This will lead to the preparation of national reports that will form an information basis for subsequent comparative analyses. In a second step, we will perform cross-national analyses for each of the four immigrant groups separately, resulting in four group-specific comparative reports. In the third and final step, the integrated report brings together the results of the country-specific and group-specific reports in an encompassing double comparative analysis across groups and countries (and their possible interactions) simultaneously. EURISLAM partner ULB (Belgium) coordinates this work package.
Output
National reports, group-specific reports and one integrated report will be made available online.
